How to Calculate Your Take-Home Pay

Step-by-step guide to calculating take-home pay from gross salary. Covers federal tax, state tax, FICA, and deductions.

Your take-home pay is the amount that actually hits your bank account after all taxes and deductions are subtracted from your gross salary. For most workers, take-home pay is 25-35% less than gross pay. Understanding exactly where each dollar goes helps you budget accurately and find legitimate ways to keep more of what you earn.

Here's the step-by-step process for calculating your take-home pay, with a worked example you can follow along with.

The Take-Home Pay Formula

The basic formula is:

Take-Home Pay = Gross Pay - Federal Income Tax - State Income Tax - FICA Taxes - Pre-Tax Deductions - Post-Tax Deductions

Step 1: Start with Gross Pay

Gross pay is your total compensation before any deductions. For salaried employees, divide your annual salary by the number of pay periods:

  • Weekly (52 pay periods): $80,000 / 52 = $1,538.46/paycheck
  • Biweekly (26 pay periods): $80,000 / 26 = $3,076.92/paycheck
  • Semi-monthly (24 pay periods): $80,000 / 24 = $3,333.33/paycheck
  • Monthly (12 pay periods): $80,000 / 12 = $6,666.67/paycheck

For hourly workers: Gross pay = hourly rate x hours worked (plus overtime at 1.5x for hours over 40).

Step 2: Subtract Pre-Tax Deductions

Pre-tax deductions come out of your gross pay before taxes are calculated, which lowers your taxable income. Common pre-tax deductions include:

  • 401(k) or 403(b) contributions: If you contribute 6% of your $80,000 salary, that's $4,800/year ($184.62/biweekly paycheck) that reduces your taxable income
  • Health insurance premiums: Most employer-sponsored health plans are pre-tax. A typical employee share is $200-$500/month
  • HSA contributions: If you have a high-deductible health plan, HSA contributions (up to $4,300 individual / $8,550 family in 2026) are pre-tax
  • FSA contributions: Flexible spending accounts for healthcare ($3,200 max) or dependent care ($5,000 max)

Using our example: $80,000 salary with $4,800 in 401(k) and $3,600 in health insurance premiums. Taxable income becomes $80,000 - $4,800 - $3,600 = $71,600.

Step 3: Calculate Federal Income Tax

Federal income tax uses a progressive bracket system. For a single filer in 2026, after the standard deduction of $15,000:

Taxable income for brackets: $71,600 - $15,000 = $56,600

  • 10% on first $11,600: $1,160
  • 12% on $11,601 - $47,150: $4,266
  • 22% on $47,151 - $56,600: $2,079

Total federal income tax: $7,505/year ($288.65/biweekly)

Step 4: Calculate State Income Tax

State income tax varies enormously:

  • No income tax (0%): Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Nevada, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota, Alaska, New Hampshire
  • Flat rate states: North Carolina (4.5%), Illinois (4.95%), Colorado (4.4%), others
  • Progressive states: California (1-13.3%), New York (4-10.9%), New Jersey (1.4-10.75%)

For our $71,600 example in North Carolina (flat 4.5%): State tax = ~$3,222/year ($123.92/biweekly). In Texas or Florida: $0.

Step 5: Calculate FICA Taxes

FICA taxes fund Social Security and Medicare. These are calculated on your gross pay (pre-tax deductions like 401k do NOT reduce FICA):

  • Social Security: 6.2% on the first $176,100 of wages
  • Medicare: 1.45% on all wages (plus 0.9% surcharge on wages over $200,000)

On $80,000 gross: Social Security = $4,960 + Medicare = $1,160 = $6,120/year ($235.38/biweekly)

FICA is non-negotiable — there's no deduction or bracket that reduces it (below the $176,100 cap). It's the same whether you're in New York or Wyoming.

Step 6: Subtract Post-Tax Deductions

Some deductions come out after taxes:

  • Roth 401(k) contributions: If you chose Roth instead of traditional
  • Life insurance premiums: Coverage above $50,000 is typically post-tax
  • Wage garnishments: Court-ordered deductions
  • Union dues: Usually post-tax

Worked Example: $80,000 Salary in North Carolina

Putting it all together for a single filer, biweekly pay:

  • Gross pay: $3,076.92
  • 401(k) (6%): -$184.62
  • Health insurance: -$138.46
  • Federal income tax: -$288.65
  • NC state income tax: -$123.92
  • Social Security (6.2%): -$190.77
  • Medicare (1.45%): -$44.62
  • Take-home pay: $2,105.88

That's $2,105.88 every two weeks, or about $4,211.76/month and $54,753/year. You started with $80,000 and took home $54,753 — a roughly 31.6% total deduction rate.
